I put in a new clutch (disc, throwout bearing, pressure plate, and pilot bearing) as well as a new flywheel. I have chatter and the clutch pedal seems bad. 1979 F150's have a long throw and if I adjust the pedal to put the engagement 1/2 way, the throwout bearing seems to hit the pressure plate body if you push to far. So I backed off the adjustment so this will not happen. I did not really change any shaft rod adjustments at the fork but this new clutch feels TOTALLY different than the old one.

It is a Napa product. I went with them for their typically good quality.

Assuming that the clutch disk is in correctly and the disk and clutch are correct, then the other suspect is the throw-out bearing. It is nearly impossible to put it in backwards without noticing. There are long and short throw-out bearings. If you put in a bearing that was shorter than the one intended for the clutch, you would have exactly the situation you described.

Just a couple ideas here.

If this clutch was new and if a diaphragm clutch..
Cover Plate looks like this.

Note in this pic that the hub (blue center with springs) side protrudes towards back of vehicle. If you place the clutch disc reversed, the hub will hit the flywheel.

Flywheel needs to be machined flat. As a clutch wears it causes high and low spots on the surface of the flywheel. Any high spots or worse yet, machined improperly will cause chatter.

The difference you feel in the clutch may be a defective cover plate, backwards clutch disc (which works I have done it, but will have problems/noise).

Your clutch engagement should be 2-3 inches from the top of travel.

The release fork pivot ball was always a problem, make sure you have the correct size release bearing. There was a couple different lengths.

Are you sure you got the right clutch ??? If the throwout bearing is bad you'll get chatter and squeal (leaking bearing)...do you have the angle right, so the clutch engages flat ???
My Ford truck had a weird clutch too...(used...someone jerk put gum, yes I said gum, in the throwout bearing, so the leak wouldn't be detected when someone bought it...of course the someone was me and I took it to another dealership and they replaced the bearing....maybe you should take it to Ford and let them look at it, as far as I can tell only people who work at Ford can fix Fords...having owned 3 myself...I've been the do it yourself fix it route...only to have to take it in...)

If the clutch and pressure plate was bought at a parts house, its a cheap clutch. A long time ago people had to buy a remanfactured Ford clutch to stop the chattering
