He no longer wants to participate in the conversation.

In my experience it means he doesn't want to answer the questions you are asking. Maybe he thinks you are overstepping the boundries of your relationship by asking the question. Maybe he is hiding something. Maybe he has to get off the phone quickly because his girlfriend or wife walked in the room. I don't like the hanging up move myself. I think it is really immature and I have a 51 year old man who does it every time we have a disagreement or I ask questions he thinks are none of my business. He has lots of issues with his "privacy" but then he has lots of other issues too. Take it as a sign to back off and pick someone else to talk to instead!

It sounds like he doesn't want to further the conversation, but that could be for a number of reasons so don't take it personal.

If I did it, it would be because the girl was ignoring my attempts to get out of the conversation. I'd say something like "For the fourth time, good-BYE," and hang up.
