Cows ( and any kind of vegetable eating animal) can eventually die from eating the wrong kinds of food not meant for their digestive systems. If you notice sometimes that both sheep and cows when in a sitting position always seem to be chewing. That's because they exactly are doing just that- they eat grass and grains etc- and later on bring the food back up and chew it again. This can't be done with meat, thus anyone mixing meat with grain is basically poisoning them.

If you are getting your proteins from other sources (and the correct amount), then you should be fine. But think about this, the people that exist in the present that are upwards of 100 years old, were born and raised before the whole vegetarian-I-don't-eat-red-meat craze, and they somehow lived long and healthy lives. To add to that, a lot of people answering your question are, as I figured, vegetarians themselves. So do what you think is best for you, and not because of what other people do or say.

Everyone!, cows are FORCED to eat meat at factory farms. They are fed leftovers of ground up cows and other animal remains. So gross! I recently read it in "The Way We Eat" by Peter Singer.
