I have been diagnosed bipolar. I can say that my mood swings pretty much can be happy, sad, chaotic irritability but there ARE times when i feel very calm but that is also scary because i have the potential to start feeling unusually blissful and happyand impulsive. I try to maintain a balance because sometimes medication isnt that helpful I think. I can literally be laughing out loud and within a minute be crying. Alot of people have the misconception that people with mental disorders are stupid. There have been some brilliant people with mental disorders. I have been hospitalized 5 times in 10 years. Sometimes when I have had psychotic breaks I have very creative and productive but not very in touch with reality. I can say by meeting people like me I often wonder if some people that are diagnosed bipolar are just mean. I definitely have a newfound sympathy towards people who are mentally disabled, but some people are just criminally insane I think. Bipolar and ADD can have people with violent fits. Borderline, bipolar, and ADD all share some characteristics. Schiziphrenia and bipolar both have the potential to have hallucinations and delusions. Well I just got on my soapbox I guess, I hope someone finds this interesting.

Not bipolar disorder. You do not have manic or hypomanic episode. Yes they are very severe to the point they are psychotic. Mania is much more than just giddiness, the person does a lot of out of character and risky behaviour which interferes with there life like alcohol and drugs abuse, risky sex, quitting jobs, spending excessive amounts of money and getting into debt, not sleeping for days on end. The episodes of mania and depression last weeks or months at a time as well, not just hours or a few days. You may have depression though but it could also be hormones, many people mistake bipolar and hormones because of the rapid changing moods.

I have to respond due to the ignorance of some people responding about this issue. There are 4 types of "bi-polarism". One is a rapid cycle, which is what I have. You can go through 20 manic and/or depressed episodes a day -- it does NOT have to last for weeks! Luckily there is a "plateau" and most of the time I am "plateaued".

There is not just a manic state for weeks then a depressed state for weeks, and back and forth, in most cases. For many years I was severly depressed and very rarely had a manic state. I was misdiagnosed for many years because of this. There is a lot of ignorance where many mental disorders are concerned, even within the profession; but mostly where unaffected people are concerned.

Yes it is possible for a person who is bipolar to be leveled headed at times. But, please, if you are thinking that you are bipolar do a little research first. Bipolar does not mean that sometimes you are happy and then a few hours later you are a little sad. People who are bipolar will be suicidally depressed for weeks and then ascend into a manic state and stay there for weeks at a time. In this manic state they will have racing thoughts, boundless energy, and often start to have hulcinations. It is not uncommon for a person who is in the manic state to be commited to a psychatric unit because they do become psychotic.

I have Bi Polar and I have NEVER been suicidally depressed never mind for weeks on end. I am mostly on the high / happy side but when I am depressed I can feel very down but not to the point of suicide. Depakote (modern replacement for Lithium Salts) medication keeps me from going to high or low.
Some others who have Bi-Polar can swing in the other direction, low most of the time with high periods.
I was more a lot more inbalanced when I was a suffering alcoholic but now I am in recovery, things have changed!! More than 60% of BI-Polar suffers endure substance misuse.
I would say that I do have times when I am neither, but I am mostly a happy person I am glad to say.
I hope this answers your question!

They can be, but they are usually on the swing, and will be manic or depressed very soon. But if a bipolar person is taking the right medicines, it is possible to supress the mood swings
