They're more lightweight & provide better grip than trainers. Try on a pair of spikes for a lap, then try it in trainers....you'll feel like you're floating with your spikes on

Track spikes are essential for several reasons. First, they're built extremely lightweight. Especially in long races, like xc races, light shoes cut down your time by about 10 seconds (doesn't sound like much until you can't beat that guy in front of you) Second, the metal spikes themselves are invaluable for traction. There is nothing more discouraging to be running along a road, path, trail...etc. and feeling your feet sliding around underneath you. You owe it to yourself to have some stability in races, it will save you.

I know they're used in cross-country to grip the ground better than a normal running shoe, for better traction. Plus they're lighter and less bulky.

They help with traction so that your power is going down the track not slipping on it.
