Try following the New Testament.
2 Corinthians 9:6 Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7 Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Tithing is something that God asks His people to do. It is definitely in the Bible. It is an acknowledgement that everything belongs to God and all He asks is for us to give back, as an offering of worship, and an act of obedience, our 10% of our earnings.
Malachi 3:8 "Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing Me! But you say, 'How have we robbed You?' In tithes and offerings.
9"You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing Me, the whole nation of you!
10"Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this," says the LORD of hosts, "if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.
If your motivation for giving is to get blessing, I kinda doubt it will happen, but if you're giving because you love God and want to be obedient, I guarantee that He will take care of you.
When I tithe, my money seems to stretch farther and I have more than I thought I had. When I don't, I don't end up with much. I have been saving for summer and I needed $1000. I worked out my budget to see how much I'd need to save during the school year. I was barely gonna make it. Right now, I have over $1000 already. I was faithful, and God blessed me. 3 months. But, a couple years ago I got a 2nd job so I could pay off my credit cards, I didn't tithe, and where there should've been more than enough, I hardly made a dent. It's not conceivable by math, I just know that it works.
PS - to mountain's answer. Yes, there was a party thrown with the tithes. But, not every week. It was a once a year or something. The everyday tithes went to the Levites, the tribe of Israel that was set apart to be the priests. They were not given land for themselves, God set it up so that they would live off the tithes and offerings. Food, not money. :)
Deut 14: 28"At the end of every third year you shall bring out all the tithe of your produce in that year, and shall deposit it in your town.
29"The Levite, because he has no portion or inheritance among you, and the alien, the orphan and the widow who are in your town, shall come and eat and be satisfied, in order that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hand which you do.

It is a way to be blessed.
I live on a low income but ever since I started tithing, I have never been without anything I need. In fact, it seems that I have more than I had before tithing.

If one give out of legalism, then they are only fulfilling their obligation. certainly I respect that G-d said to tithe. Essentially, it has been rightly said, that you are just returning to G-d a portion of what is His. Our increase comes from G-d, the ability we have to make money, our talents and so forth, all came from Him. We may honor Him by using our talents for His glory. He has even promised to multiply that which we invest in the kingdom. If we give ten percent (tithe) and give it willingly, we will be blessed, if we give it begrudgingly, we'd be better off not giving it. There is an example in the gospels where Jesus observes a widow giving a "mite" and He said that she had given more then everyone else who gave, because she had given 100%. There is a challenge to Christians to live so as to be able to give as much as they can for the furtherance of the gospel (not to line some televangelists pockets). Give anonymously (no record keeping and no IRS deduction) and He will reward you in secret. Give with a cheerful heart, that is the bottom line, no matter if it's 1% or 100.

guess what the preachers don't tell you?
That in those days, after everyone gave their tithes, they used it to throw a big PARTY for everyone to enjoy. They didn't use it to pay their bills or ministers.
On the flip side, in the NEW Testament, we are commanded to give EVERYTHING. We are not to have plenty while other Christians go hungry. So there you have the true cultural connotations of tithing.

There is quite a lot of evidence that "Christianity" was invented to resolve the problem of Gentiles not having to give any money to a church "authority", and that inventing a non-Jewish religion was the easiest fix. Does it not strike you as just a little odd that generally Christian & Jewish 'churches' get along so well, even though one is founded on the notion that the other is completely wrong about the "Messiah"?
Business is business!
I don't know whether or not God is even there, but if He is, I would hope he would "bless" you more for giving your charity directly to people who need it rather than to an organized church so they can waste half of it on "administration".
Think about it, if Jesus had enough money to build the "Crystal Cathedral" on 36 acres of prime real estate, do you think he'd build a giant greenhouse with it, or use it to do something useful?

We are stewards of God's resources.and every believer is a steward of everything he possesses.God requires our tithes.Leviticus 27:30;Deut.14:22 ...in old testament God's purpose of thithing...to support the poor and needy in Israel.to support the Levites. In new testament...support the poor and needy in God's family and to support teachers and preachers.God make a special promise to those who give.Luke 6:38...give and it shall given back to you, good measure, pressed
down and shaken together.tithing is a privilege.it means people who tithe exercise their faith to give.tithing does not buy God's blessing, but it does release His blessing upon our lives.(Malachi 3:10).The bible teaches us we are to give willingly and cheerfully, from a spirit of generosity. The Macedonian christians were in great poverty, yet they gave liberally. They had learned obedience in giving and they also learned that giving brings blessing to break the curse of poverty.Generous giving is a proof of our love, faith and maturity.
i give my tithes every week because i receive my salary every week.i give 10% of my salary.i thank God cause He blesses me so much not only material things also good health.Praise God!

My opinion is that you should just give whatever amount (if any)you think is right, no one should tell you that you have to arbitrarily give a specific amount, your faith should dictate what you should give, if anything.
