Depending on your method and consistency, it can take anywhere from a few days to a month. Crate training is fastest and most effective, because a dog won't soil his bed anymore than you would. For this, you need an airline crate or other secure place to confine your puppy when you are not having direct interaction with him. Give him a blanket and a few toys, but food and water should be given outside the crate. The puppy should be taken to the place you want him to use for the bathroom immediately after leaving the crate, and just before going into it, also immediately after playing, eating or drinking water. You have to be consistent and encouraging, and pile on the praise when your puppy potties in the right place. It is important to remember that your puppy can't stay in the crate for extended periods of time, and if you have to be away from him for more than a couple of hours at a time, it would be best to enlist the help of someone that can be with him to let him out to potty and play every few hours. Your vet can provide you with literature to instruct you on the proper procedure, or you can request information from Purina , Pedigree, or a pet store.

Breed, size, individual differences, and even your own habits will all play a role in the housebreaking of your puppy. Some smaller breeds can be harder to housebreak due to the small size of the bladders. Some breeds may be tougher to housebreak than others, based on many things. The most important thing is that you have patience, and take the time to do it properly.
Some people use crate training to help in the process. Dogs don't like to eliminate where they sleep, so they will be more likely to "hold it" in the crate.
It should not take more than a few weeks to a month at most to properly housebreak a dog. If it takes longer than that, you may need to modify your methods, or see a vet, as it could be a sign of a medical condition.

Every dog is different, but you can expect anywhere from a month to a year. Much depends on the breed of the puppy, the temperament of the puppy (easy-going or anxiety-ridden), and if it has a dog-door to outside. It was a good year before my chihuahua halted all accidents but she is an apartment dog without a dog door.

Are you doing the training yourself or are others helping? I swear that I can housetrain a dog by myself in two weeks as long as I am home for that two weeks and have no other obligations ! By house train I mean, making the dog/pup go outside to do his buisness. It takes consisentcy and firmness and lots of praise!! But two weeks is my answer!

there is no set time. all are different. when it starts going to the door on its own then you know it is now on the right track to being potty trained

It took about six months with my two. And by that I mean it took six months for them to not only understand that they were supposed to go outside, but also to mature to a point where we weren't going outside every two hours in the night~i.e. they slept through the night. They actually got the idea that they weren't supposed to go to the bathroom in just a few weeks.
