When i was 6 i hugged a rottweiler that did not want to be hugged. He bit my hat. It did no damage, But It did scare me. PLUS, my mom from that day on 'trained' me to fear rottweilers. So i avoided them until i was 13 when my cousin got a rottweiler that he said was sweet, so i decided to face my fears. WELL, his dog sensed my fear, and also tried to bite me. I know this was my own fault in both cases by not being educated about dog behavior in general. I am 21 and have been affraid of rottweilers, until i started working at a vet clinic. I first avoided rottweilers all together, knowing that they sense fear, not that i thought the dog was mean. After slowly over coming my fear and meeting a lot of rottweilers i have found that almost all rottweilers are wonderfully sweet dogs, and i am not affraid of any of them. i may someday (years from now, when i am completely confident) own one. Just wondering if you own one, and you think of rottweilers?

I have met some really sweet and adorable rottweilers and some that were mean. I really think that it all depends on the owners of the dog. My aunt and uncle had one that was awesome around kids, loved people and wouldn't hurt a fly. I also know people who had them and left them outside all the time, didn't care for them and such and they were mean dogs. So, like any other dog, they can be trained well. Unfortunately, rotts do have a bad rap and it ruins it for those that are good dogs.

i have a rottweiler, got her 4 months ago from the shelter. I love her. She is a great dog. I have 3 kids age 4-8 and she is good with them. Ive known 4 people who have had rottwielers and they were great dogs. I think any kind of dog can be mean, it's mostly their determination and size that scares people i think. They are great guard dogs. When you think about it there are mean-*** dogs in every breed especially the small dogs but people dont worry much about them because they are small. My dog and the others I have know have never done anything harmfull. I have been bitten three times im my life pretty bad though, and all by mutts.
Ive heard alot of stories about them protecting their owners, like one of my friends took his rotwlr to a 'swiming hole' and the dog would not let him jump into the water from a high place

Rotts can be good dogs. A friend of ours had 2 of them...the female was a little mean...but the male was a HUGE baby! My sister and brother in law also rescued one. He could not be trusted. The people who had him...his litter mates and the mother dog were VERY abusive to them That's how my sister got her dog...they rescued the mother and the puppies that the ******* didn't kill! He beat the mother dog so bad that he broke her eye socket...she was a REALLY sweet dog and we also got her a good home. ANYWAY...we think my sisters dog might have had brain damage. He would be ok one minute and VERY mean the next...for no reason..they NEVER abused him...he was always growing at my sister...and even bit my nephew...who was in his 20s...not a little kid. They had him til he was old and the vet suggested they put him to sleep..he had a few major health problems at that time...all in all he was a decent dog.

I have never owned a rot, but I have friends that do. The dogs are very gentle, however these dogs were born to protect their"family" members. No reason to train them to protect it is just built in....any animal can sense if someone is afraid of them. If ya get a rot just get it when it is a puppy and continue to work with it on a daily basis, and you shouldnt have any problems. I have owned Great Danes, Dobies, Mastifs, German Sheppards and everyone of them were very protective of the family members but also big babies at the same time; great with kids.

I was the proud owner of Darlin, Damsel of Emily. She was the most wonderful dog I have ever owned and ever will, I am sure. She was so sweet. She used to care for a couple young ducklings that my kids got tired of caring for. She carried them away with their heads in her mouth to another portion of the yard and deposit them. One day I witnessed Doves crawling over her to get to her water dish and food bowl. She was a terrific watchdog in so much as she had a great growl, but I never feared that she would harm anyone. She never did. This wonderful breed of dog will give you nothing but pleasure if you just treat them with love and affection.

I personally dont like them. When I was a kid we had one and it was very aggressive! He bit me in my face for no reason once and used to go crazy when i would walk him if he saw a cat or another dog and would drag me. However I think if they have alot of training and a firm hand they can be great dogs! Also this breed is a breed that likes to have a job ( working breed) and Is happier and more content when being worked.

I don't own one, but I know 2 very well that come to the dog park a lot. One is named Vinny. He's the sweetest! He'll come right up to you and sit on your lap, and lick your face. Another one, Luke, peed on someone once, but really, hes so sweet, and he'll lick you too. I love rottweilers. I mean, unless they're trained to be mean, they're so sweet! They really have a loving nature.

Don't own one but have had some friends with them I played with the dogs. I think they are mostly good natured and although supposed to be guard dogs most I've see behave like hounds, are playful and friendly.

They do look fierce and are large powerful dogs so I guess they should be treated carefully. I guess its how you look at them. I won't touch a chow. I've heard of several of them attacking, and I've never seen one that was friendly.

I use to own several 3 died of old age, and 2 I had to give away. If I didn't live so close to an elementary school, I would still have them! (unfortunately many parents don't teach their children not to jump over 6ft fences to play with Rotties!)

No, I don't own one, but I think they can be great dogs. They can be very sweet. You can train them to be a gaurd dog and they do very good at it. If you got an agressive one, you can always take it to training and teach it not to be agressive.
