Why don't you listen to a recitation of it in Arabic, and see the effect is has on your soul? (even tho not being able to understand it)

Then, try reading its meaning and seeing what effect is has.

To answer your question, yes it does have a humility inducing affect, increases your God-Consciousness and soothing, fear-eliminating effect not to mention a heart-melting, sobering, alerting, purifying effect.

Peace be with you

By powers do you mean mystical powers? If so, no they do not possess that. It is through their recitation that one gains (God willing) a spirtual connection with God in which he/she feels something has changed about them. So the words themselves through their recitation either reading, listening or examining can cause someone to be "uplifted." Insha'Allah I pray that this intrepretation is correct if not I ask for his forgiveness.

Powers?

The Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) did instruct us to read certain Surahs to protect us from certain problems, I think.

But writing them on amulets is useless.

The miracle of the holy Quran is eternal. Here are some virtues of reciting certain Quranic verses but of course, there are more than just these:

Ayat Al-Kursi (Verse 255 of Surat Al-Baqarah)

It is reported by way of Abu Hurairah (RA) that someone used to come upon him and take from the charity – which the Prophet (SAW) had made him guardian over – night after night, so on the third night, he said: “I will report you to the Messenger of Allah (SAW), the man said: ‘Let me teach you some phrases with which Allah will cause you benefit’ – they were very eager for good – so he said: ‘When you go to, read ‘Ayaht ‘al-kursee (Verse 255 of Surat Al-Baqarah) completely, for there is still upon you from Allah a guardian, and no shaytan can get close to you until you enter upon morning.’ Then he (SAW) said: “He told you the truth and he is a liar, (that was a shaytan).” (Sahih Al-Bukhari)

"Do you know which verse (Ayah) in God's book (Qur'an) is Greatest?" he asked and then showed his approval when he was told that this was Ayat-ul-Kursi (Verse of the Throne)," reports Ubayy ibn Ka'b (R). (Collected by Muslim)

Surat Al-Kahf

The Prophet (SAW) said: “Whoever would read Surat Al-Kahf on Friday it would provide him of light for the duration between the two Fridays.” (‘Al-Adawee said that opinions differed about this hadeeth. He said that it was reported by ‘Al-Hakim, who said that it was of sound ascriiption. He also said that it had testimonial in a hadeeth reported by way of ‘Ibn ‘Umar in Targheeb. ‘Al-‘Albani (ra) said that it was reported by ‘Al-Bayhaqi, and ‘Al-Hakim. It is in his Saheeh Al-Jami’ As-Sagheer was Ziyadatih, and he said it was sound.)
“…He who amongst you would survive to see him (dajjal) should recite over him the opening verses of Sura Kahf...” (Sahih Muslim)

Tafsir Ibn Kathir from Musnad Ahmad

Whoever reads and memorizes the first ten of Al-Kahf will be saved from fitnah of Ad-Dajjal.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir from Sahih Muslim and Nasai say last ten of Al-Kahf.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir from Musnad Ahmad says if the first ten and last ten of Al-Kahf is memorized then from the feet to the head will be in the light. If the whole Surah is memorized then light from earth to sky.

Surah al-Mulk (67)

"This (Surah) containing thirty verses, intercedes for a person till his sins are forgiven," reports Abu Hurairah (R). (Collected by Ahmad, at-Tirmidhi, and Abu Dawud)

[Note: The Prophet (S) and his companions (R) used to read Surah al-Mulk every night before going to sleep as it protects the one who recites this Surah, from the torment of the grave.]

["WAY TO THE QUR'AN", by Ustadh Khurram Murad (Rahimahullah)]

-------------

Tafsir Ibn Kathir from Musnad Abd bin Hamid

Abdullah ibn Abbas (RA) said to a person, “Should I give you a gift that you will become happy with? That gift is “Tabarak Allathee…” Read it and teach it to your family and to your children and to your neighbors. This Surat releases from the punishment of the day of judgment on behalf of the one who reads it and saves him from the punishment of the grave. The Prophet (SAW) said, “I wish that each and every one of my Ummah has it in their heart.”
(Read Sahih Hadeeth for Surat Al-Mulk in the Urdu translation of the Quran by Ahsan al Bayan)

Surat Al-Kaafirun

Tafsir Ibn Kathir from Musnad Ahmad Nuahfil bin Mu’awiyah said that Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, “Read Kaafirun and sleep and you will be saved from shirk.”
The Mu’awwithat (the last two Surah of the Quran: Falaq, Nas)

It is reported of ‘Uqbata bin ‘Amir that he said: “The Messenger of Allah (SAW) ordered that I read The Mu’awwithat after every Salat.” (Reported by Abu Dawud, At-Tirmithi, and An-Nasa’ee. Al-Albani (ra) said it was of sound ascriiption and that Ibn Hijbban said it was sound. He included this hadeeth in The Authentic of Good Sayings)

The Three Quls (the last three Surah of the Quran: Ikhlas,Falaq, Nas)
Narrated 'Aisha: Whenever thy Prophet go went to bed every night, he used to cup his hands together and blow over it after reciting Surat Al-Ikhlas, Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An-Nas, and then rub his hands over whatever parts of his body he was able to rub, starting with his head, face and front of his body. He used to do that three times. (Sahih Al-Bukhari)

“Upon going to his bed each night, the Messenger of Allah (SAW) would bring his palms together. Then he would spittle (Spittle is being used for the Arabic word nafth. Nafth is to put the top of your tongue between your lips and to blow lightly as you pull your tongue back which in this case causes a misty spray onto your hands) in them, then he would recited into them Qul huwal ‘allahu ‘ahad, Qul ‘a’outhu birabbil falaqi, and Qul ‘a’outhu birabbin-nasi (Meaning the last three Surah of the Quran), then he would wipe with them whatever he is able to of his body, he would begin with his head and face, and the foreside of his body. He would do this three times.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

God knows best

Peace and Love
