I was involved in a relationship with a soilder 5 years ago while he was located in my state. Our relationship was great, but it ended because I was scared of commitment at the time. We stayed friends, but as he went back and forth to Iraq, I lost contact with him. Recently I found him again. He's currently in Iraq (3rd time) and he will be leaving both Iraq and the Army in November. He'll be returning to his home state (4 states away). I have always wanted a second chance with him (especially since I'm not afraid of commitment now) and I do feel that despite the committment fears, together the 2 of us were a force to be reckoned with. I want to tell him exactly how I feel and ask him for a second chance (distance is of no issue to me) but is now the time? I don't want to wait any longer to share my feelings, but I don't know if thats something that I should place on him while he's deployed.

I'm going to say wait until he gets back (or at least make contact with him and let him know you want to talk to him when he returns). The reason for me saying that is that serving in a war overseas could have changed his personality and the type of person he is now. Anyone can change after 5 years, but serving three tours of duty in Iraq I'm sure did have some effect on him.

Play it safe and let him know that you want to talk to him when he returns, but don't go into any details. You may find after 5 years that you guys have a lot less in common. For all you know he might have another girlfriend. At the very least be prepared for the possibility that could be the case.

Good luck!

I would tell him now, wish my ex wife would have done it while I was away, would have made it easier to move on rather than get the news then have to see her with her new boyfriend all the time. Do it while he's away. Dear John letters suck but I mean, the sooner the better.

Don't distract him while he's in a war zone. That usually doesn't turn out too well. (What's with all the guys in Iraq around here? That's all I see these days.)
