Make the payment to the collection agency. It shouldn't be showing up twice on his report, so tell him to dispute the duplicate entry on his credit report. If the creditor and/or the collection agency don't respond within the allotted time, they will both fall off & he won't even owe the money anymore. It's worth a shot. If not, just pay the collection agency. The debt has been sold by the original creditor to them.

He would send it to the collections department; the original place sent it there and now they have nothing to do with it. Your friend has to deal with the lovely collections agency. On a side note, you can negotiate with the agency. They would rather have some payment rather than nothing. They "buy" your debt from the hospital for pennies on the dollar.

If it is not a legit bill or they the Dr. did not bill it to the insurance company correctly contact the collection agency and dispute the bill with a written dispute (politely written). They will contact the Hospital to let them no the bill has been disputed. Contact the credit report publisher to let them know the account #does not belong to them and it should be removed from report. Pay no one if not legit.

depending on the state you live in
it may be illegal to be on your credit report at all.
contact the company who your friend owes the money to, not the collection agency. agencies "buy" the debt from the institution and collect a % when you pay it back. once the debt has been payed the institution calls off the collection agency. they arent supposed to hound you either. maybe your friend can arrange payments with the institution

She should call the collection agency and tell them the situation. They will contact the hospital and get the account number corrected.

the debt collector. By now, the original creditor (the hospital) has paid this company to collect it's debts and you must go thru the collector to get rid of the bad mark on the credit report (in most cases)

confirm you pay the sequence. it is going to then record on your credit as a paid sequence. it is going to drop your credit some, yet no longer something severe. as long as you take care of your credit frequently you would be high quality. i'm a private loan officer and examine credit for a residing, and that i can assure you that a $114 paid scientific sequence won't injury you in any way while attempting to get any form of private loan.
