Firstly, don't hit your dog unless you want to create a fearful, anxious or aggressive dog.
Bitter Apple spray is good - vinegar may work and it's cheaper. You can actually soak a nylon collar in it. If you're using a flat buckle collar, you may need to punch a hole in it to get a better fit. If your dog isn't' a large breed, you can use a collar that has a plastic snap buckle (I don't recommend those for large dogs.) You can adjust them for a more precise fit.
As far as the rose bushes go you should supervise him outside. All dogs need to chew, so why not direct it somewhere you don't mind him chewing. Go to www.dog.com and buy the appropriate size Kong Toys. Instead of giving him food in a bowl, mix his food with water and maybe a little low fat yogurt. When the food is soft and mushy, stuff it into the Kong. I also use a small piece of Velveeta in the small end so it doesn't leak. Then put the Kong in the freezer. A "Kongscicle" takes hours to work through. I have two rescued Pitbulls. They get Kongs every day and they don't chew on anything.
Good luck!

I got a tux toy (http://amzn.to/1tMslrC) for my mutt, keeps him busy and wears out his jaw, so he's less likely to chew other things, I just put in a spoonful of peanut butter once in a while. You might also want to look into a motion activated sprinkler to protect your plants.

it somewhat isn't any longer that the chews are undesirable for canines, it somewhat is only that some canines do no longer chew there nutrition/treats all right and if it is so ,w/ a rawhide chew it gets logged someplace and it will start to swell up from asborton from physique fluids and the end result isn't superb- you should make confident 12 months dogs completely chews those in the previous you ever go away it on my own-and nonetheless i could advise you be around, animals are humorous-you in no way understand. there are various no longer common chew toys you will get, even some to conceal treats in-i take advantage of those for my german shepard-i does no longer go away 12 months dogs on my own w/a chewy,my opinion......

No . AS for chewing when you catch him doing it "pop" him on the nose with your two fingers, scold him and tell him----""NO CHEW" bad dog-------------you have to catch him chewing. It doesnt do any good to scold him a hour or so later as he has no idea what he is being scolded for.

Maybe you can fence the parts of your yard that you don't want him going in or. Or put something around it that he would like to smell.

Bitter apple spray. You can buy it at your local pet store, and it won't lick it/bite it at all. I can't recommend that for his collar though...
