I own a D70s and D200, so I can't really comment on the D80, but between the size and feel of the D70s and the sensor and processing of the D200, I have formed an opinion. One of these articles is subtitled, "Psst - Want a D200 at half the price?" If the D80 came out before I bought my D200, I may have bought that and been happy enough to stick with it. There are only a few tricks the D200 can do that the D80 can't and the D80 can even do a couple that the D200 can't. Here are a few links, in case you have not seen this material yet. They will give you more pros and cons than I could dream of.

I am a D50 shooter but I have had a chance to hold a D80 and do a little comparison. First off, I love the D80's viewfinder. It is bright and larger than the D50's. I also love the D80's auto focus sensor array. In my opinion the sensor array is better than a comparable Canon (more sensors and better placement) and much better than my D50's. I also like the feel of the camera but then I am used to the Nikon feel. Another pro versus the Canon is that the D80 has a spot exposure meter. I don't use the spot meter a lot but it is nice to have for certain shooting situations.

I don't really have any cons with this camera. If I had the spare change I'd be upgrading to the D80 myself.

I just got this camera (thank goodness for Xmas...) and use it for several different sports as well as a variety of pj applications ranging from indoor conferences to outdoor parades (the beauty of a small newspaper: the work is always different). I have used almost every one of Nikon's professional digicams ranging from the D2x to the D200 to the venerable D100 and D50. The D80 definitely fits the bill for a primary light to medium use camera or as a secondary camera because of its relatively small size, light weight, and versaitlity. The most noticiable difference between the D80 and the D200 is the body. The D80 is made of "plastic", however, I have foudn it to be more than enough for several drops from waist height onto various hard surfaces (can't say as much for the poor lenses...). The new D-lighting system within the D80 is a great asset for quick and easy editing on the fly and the new wireless flash system is a dream come true.

All that to say, if you need a camera right now for this price, by all means get the D80. However, if you can wait, I'd stick around and see what Nikon pulls out of their hat as a replacement for the D200.

Cheers and good luck with a great hobby!
