whats so wrong with listening to music?

i play guitar, and someone told me its prohibited in islam. strings are prohibited? why?

as for the comment that music is encouraged in christianity; have you ever read saint thomas aquainas or saint augustinos?

Real explantion though: It has not been prohibited in the Quran so I will not consider it a true legal ruling because it goes against logic. Granted, you should not create haram lyrics or listen to music that will make you do bad things. "Besides, this hadith does not clearly prohibit the use of musical instruments" And Allah knows best.
I am Muslim and play the guitar too. Rock on! :)

In Christianity music is encouraged and considered to be a very spiritual thing. I would assume the same from Judaism because the book of Psalms are all songs, primarily written by David.
Haven't you heard of Christian Rock and the other forms of Christian Contemporary Music?? It's very popular.
Some very radical Christians believe that all harder music is evil and some believe that all secular music is evil... I don't really agree.
I think that, like anything, if the music you listen to doesn't glorify God or brings about unholy feelings, then it's not a good thing to subject yourself too...
Just my opinion.

not what goeth into a man that defileth a man;but what comes out of a man defileth a man.
what comes out of a person reveals what they let get in their heart.You can listen to music and not let it get in your heart.
I listen to Jazz,Rap,R&B, and other types;but I make sure I dont put that music before God.
anything put before God is Idoletry.

NO IT IS NOT BUT LISTING TO SONGS AND MUSICE THAT MAKE U DO SOMETHING BAD IS HARAM BUT IT IS NOT HARAM AT ALL LISTEN ALOT TO IT BUT LISTING TO CURUSING SONGS VERY SEXAUL SONG IS HRAMA
