Believe it or not, America once paid "tribute" to the Islamic world in order to prevent Muslims from continuing to kill and enslave American sailors who travelled near Islamic lands.
The greedy Sultan demanded more Jizya (tribute or blackmail from the infidel/kafoir), and when Jefferson refused, the Sultan declared war on America for not paying blackmail!! Again, tribute is like paying the mob to not hurt you...get it? America recieved nothing else but the promise not to be killed and enslaved by Muslims.
Why did the Muslims feel total license to murder Americans who did them no harm? Has the character of Islam changed any?

One Muslims leader, who was probably corrupt, just as any Christian can be corrupt, does not represent all Muslims.
You are judging a religion by the acts of power-hunger individuals who used religion, just as Popes and Christian kings and emperors have used religion for centuries. Remember the Crusades? That's when Christians taught Muslims how to kill in the name of religion.
Islam is about peace and love, not hatred and bloodshed. Muhammad and the Qur'an teach AGAINST violence and hatred. Only defensive warfare is permissible in Islam.
