How can I figure out whether my Budgie (bird) has lice, mites, or just dry skin? He is always scratching himself, and rubs his head against his perch often. Wouldn't I see the bugs?

Birds just like to scratch, especially if they get bored.

Provide him with a shallow bath so he can play in it.

It's also highly possible that he's just using his perch as a preening tool to assist in cracking those pin feathers after he moults.

Give him lots of toys and don't fret unless he starts plucking his feathers out and gets bald patches...THAT'S when you have to worry.

Hi there. Mites are very tiny but can be seen with the naked eye, lice are a tad bigger. Both these parasites would cause noticeable skin damage from a rash-like appearance to scaly and bleeding skin with definite bald spots. Fill a sink or basin with one inch of warm water and let your parakeet bathe. If he just sits there, splash the water with your fingers and encourage him with enthusiasm ( like talking to a toddler) Rotate his toys and create foraging toys to keep his mind occupied. i use newsprint (most use soy dyes these days) and cut rectangles, put a treat in the middle and twist the ends to close. They love to open their "packages" for special treats. Have a great relationship with your special friend. Have a great year..
