It varies. There are different levels (1a,2a etc) A basic one would be a few hundred and would stop smaller handgun rounds. Heavier vests that stop some rifle fire cost much more. Troops in Iraq do not use the same vests as law enforcement. Their vests are much heavie and can withstand rifle fire, which most police vests can't do. Military vests (and those worn by SWAT) have heavy ceramic plates that stop armor piercing rounds and sharapnel. They run several thousand dollars. Many soldiers buy additional armor and/or better armor. Some do wear police type vests for added protection or comfort. There is no prohibition against this. For the recors, ballistic vetst (bullet proof) are not knife resistant. It helps, but many knives will go right through. Correction officers wear knife or dual type vests. Bullet proof vests work based on the bullets velocity and the kevlars stopping ability. Knives are very low velocity and can slip through and cut kevlar strands. A police type vest is really just strands of fabric that "catch" a bullet and stop it. The wearer can still be seriously injured. For prices, check out www.galls.com They carry them all.

The prices vary, depending on what you want it to stop or resist. And they can range from $200.00 to $1500.00, I don't know if they are issued to the soldiers, but they should be and I cannot see why you could not send one to your loved one for added protection. There are many companies, but a good one is called "Second Chance".
