i mechanic for a living,,and i don't own one,,but i work on a bunch of them,,the most problems i have seen from them,is the transmission in them seems to give trouble at, or around the 100 k mark,,other than that the engines and everything else holds up good in them,,they give an occasional heater problem once in a while but then so does every other car or truck made,,but if you decide to buy one drive it real good ,make sure the transmission shifts perfect in it,,i did one of these before x-mas,and it cost about 2 thousand bucks for a new transmission,,that's not counting labor, make sure its alright before you buy it,,because it will be a real head ache if it goes out,,good luck with it,i hope this help,s.

I don't own a 1997 Explorer but I do own a 1992 and a 2003. Our 1992 has 180 thousand miles on it and it doesn't use a drop of oil. It has been a great vehicle. Our 2003 had some bugs that needed worked out on it but it was still under warranty and now it is perfect. Just a little advice....we have leather in one and cloth in the other and the cloth one is much more comfortable! I wish I would have gotten cloth again. By any means, I love my Explorer!
