I know! I love snakes and all reptiles, and the illiterate christians had to ruin it for them. It's a bad as thinking bats are "evil" because of vampire movies. Or black cats are bad luck. Pure ignorance.

the biggest reason is xenophobia, or worry of that that's distinctive. this could be a deeply hardwired worry that is going back to the daybreak of humanity, and is shared with the aid of all the primates. some human beings can triumph over it, a minimum of partly, and a few can not. it is incredibly an identical instinct that reasons one and all of those tribal wars that are happening international extensive (and that i comprise Iran/Iraq, Bosnia/Serbia/Croatia, the U.S. meltdown, and all the African wars in that). there is "me", that that's like me (my tribe), and that that's "different", or unlike me (everybody and each thing else). some "others" are a sprint like me, so we expect of they are stunning, like monkeys. some issues are too very like "me", yet nevertheless too distinctive to be our tribe, so we hate them, like the tribe downriver. And, some issues are so distinctive they only freak us out, like spiders or snakes or politicians. faith truthfully would not help. the two you have a clergyman asserting snakes are evil or a clergyman asserting snakes are gods that would devour your soul, or some such rot. And, having a mom who freaks out whilst she sees a snake is probable to reason little Jimmie to freak out on each occasion he sees a snake from that day onward. yet, the biggest reason is as a results of the fact it is organic to worry "unusual" issues.

I still can't stand them. If they were all non-poisonous then I wouldn't mind but they can kill you. Thankfully someday according to the bible small children will play with adders and be in no danger at all.

Lets narrow it down...

Cute animals have limbs.

No limbs=scary. The human mind is so imperfect in it's associations.

Obviously it's genetic. We seem to be freaked out by any animals that have no expression (reptiles, amphibians, etc...)

thats like asking "why people are afraid of mice?" or "why are some people afraid of the dark?"

they just are.

they know in their mind (usually) that it is an irrational fear, yet they fear it anyway.
