The one thing about tattoos is the fact that its not like wearing a cross, or having a wedding band something tangible, its more than that. It's a part of you, its something that can NEVER be robbed of you or stolen from you. It's a personal keepsake, that someone decided was so important to them that they would sacrifice their time, and body for for the rest of their lives. That to me speaks louder than any wedding ring, any friendship bracelet etc could EVER do.
Now granted some people will get tattoos to stray outside of the mainstream or to be less like people like you, needless to say I can't blame them, while others do it because tattoos are rather popular right now and they want to be like everyone else. Also another reason some people get them is because it makes them feel more attractive. For instance my friend had surgery on her spine, then went and had a tattoo cover up the scar which I think looks much better. People do things like get fake boobs, or pierce their ears or dye their hair because they're trying to project the image of something they want. Opposites attract, but that phrase is usually referring to personality differences, but for the most part people with lots of tats, hook up with people who either have them or like them. It's basically a way of narrowing down potential mates. I know that having my tattoos has weeded out a lot of pompass close minded prude individuals of which I wouldn't want anything to do with even before I had tattoos.
The only difference between tattoos and getting boob jobs plastic surgery etc is because these are socially santioned money makers that the Government can tax and make money off of from the Doctors performing them. So I hope this answers your question, remember Proconception is the greatest barrier to enlightenment!

Depends on the person, you could see it as a permanent peice of art, something to remember/honor someone else by, there are all sorts of reasons, like sentimental value. I think most people don't do it for attention. Although if you're talking about people who get the tribal armband or lower back tattoo of some silly object I can see where you might draw that conclusion, even if I don't completely agree.

There are various reasons as to why people get tattoos...there are those out there that use it for attention or to "show off' - but there are also those that are paying tribute to a person or event...and there are also those that just like having art on their body....nothing wrong with having one...and no one HAS to have a tattoo...

It's a form of body art. Like Piercings. It's your body why not do something to it to make it more of your own. My mother has a tattoo on her back with my name in a sun flower. The sunflower is easly covered by her shirt , If this tatto was ment to get attention would she not have it in a more notible place? Not all people get tattoos for attention many just get them because they want them. ALso on a final note. Why do you care it's not your body.

It expresses who they are . not for attention . It's art at it's finest . there are some who say nasty things , but , that's their right ,, just like I have a right to get my whole leg tattooed with my families name and anything else I like . If you saw me on the street you would never imagine me having tattoos . I am a professional , i have grown children , and 5 grand sons do i need attention no, I like tattoos . it's in my blood pardon the pun .so judge no one unless you want to be judge too ....

I have 2. It's not for attention, it's a way to express myself. One of them was also a birthday present from my parents. I was told that I would regret it when I got older, but so far after almost 5 years and 2 kids, i still love it. So I guess in a way it is an attention getter...shows that I'm a little wilder than I look, right? But that's honestly not why I got them. I'm thinking about getting another one. And I love tatoos on men, on their arms. It's hot.

i didn't "have" to have a tattoo and i certainly didn't get any of them for attention. do you have to wear the style clothes you wear? or do you just wear them for the attention?
i collect art. oil paintings, water colors, acrylic paintings and tattoos. i love art. sorry if you are too closed minded to realize that not everybody needs attention like you do.

I didn't have to get mine. I wanted to get mine. I have 2 rather large tattoos. One is about 8x10 on my back and one goes from knee to ankle. I plan on more. None get to see them unless I want them to be seen. I didn't get them for attention. I got them for me an me alone. I'm chasing a dream of being tatted up. I didn't start my adventure till I turned 36. I won't stop till I feel I am done. If you don't like it...dont look.

I have had one for years and I have never regretted having it done. I am a normal 65 year old mother of 3 and grandmother of 5. This ole' granny bakes cookies and does all the older lady things. My tattoo is in a place that nobody can see, unless I chose to show them. To me it's like a piece of jewelry that never needs to be taken off nor do I fear losing it.

People don't HAVE to have a tattoo. They CHOOSE to have one. More times than not, people get tattoos to mark an important milestone in their life or memorialize someone who meant something to them. Important thing is not to judge those who choose to adorn themselves with tattoos.
