Two of our boys wet the bed. They are 6 and 11. I am using youth diapers on both of them. The 11 year old was using goodnites, but recently they started causing him problems so we switched him over to his brothers tena diapers and we haven't had any problems since.

Here is the problem though, tomorrow night my husband and i are going out and our sitter is coming over. Our six year old has no problem with the sitter knowing about his bedwetting but our 11 year old is pretty sensitive. We are planning on being out past 1AM and I have no desire to be cleaning wet sheets when I get home. I figured i'd just have them both ready for bed and in their pjs when the sitter comes over... tomorrow at 6, but it might be a little early to throw a diaper on both of them. Does anyone have any suggestions? The sitter knows they both are wetters.

I am not an expert but it would seem to me that using diapers for children of this age is not a good thing to do and will do nothing to help cure the condition, let alone help their self asteem. There are several medications to treat bedwetting including DDAVP that are available through your doctor. I suggest investigating this option to address the condition.

Your 11 year old is old enough to put a pull-up or diaper on himself at bedtime. He can go into the bathroom right before he goes to bed and do that himself. If he doesn't know how, it's time he learned. Same for the 6 year old. My son was a bed-wetter until he was 12, at which time we tried the nasal spray and it completely stopped the bedwetting after a couple weeks!

To save him the embarrassment, and myself the loss of sleep, I would make his bed in two layers, putting a plastic sheet under the first set of linens. That way if/when he woke up in the middle of the night, he'd strip the wet stuff and the plastic sheet off and have nice, clean dry sheets to go back to sleep on. I think it helped with his self-esteem and made him more independent.

Good luck!

I would think that an 11 year old (even a 6 year old) could get dressed for bed without the sitter standing over them. Tell the sitter to give them privacy to get changed. Tell the boys they can change in their room or the bathroom with the door shut.

Look just let the 11 year old put one on for himself, certainly he knows how by now. Then he can put on the pjs in the bathroom and doesnt have to say a word to the sitter except that hes ready for bed.

Let the 11 year old dress himself for bed. He should be able to get the diaper on without assistance.

Your 11 year old can put his youth diaper on himself. Not to mention his pj's. There is no reason he can't do this himself when he is ready for bed. He should be doing this already anyway. Please tell me you are not getting him dressed at 11.

There is also no reason why he can't strip his bed put the sheets in the wash, etc.

Your children are capable of doing many of these things themselves, it will build their self esteem. In order to ensure you are raising healthy boys who are ready for the responsibilities of the world you must empower them through learning to do things for themselves.

your 11 year old is big enough to take care of changing and putting on a diaper. He is also old enought to go to his room at bed time and get ready for bed byhimself.
