and I don't get why we have to wear a mask, gloves and gown when we go to visit him in the Hospital. Every website that I have read on says that you can be a carrier and it is not harmful to healthy people. So is all this for his protection or ours??
Please help me make sense of this

The PPE (personal protective equipment) that you must wear is for everyone's safety. Your grandfather is in contact isolation. While it is true that if you are healthy you may not be affected by MRSA and never realize that you have it, you can become colonized and a chronic carrier. Think outside the box you are in. You can spread the bacteria to others who are not so fortunate as to have an intact or mature immune system (the already ill, those with compromised or depressed immune systems, the debilitated and infants). You can also leave the bacteria on the rails on the hospital hallway walls, the elevator button, the shopping cart at the market, etc.

Use the isolation cart in the hallway and put the PPE on outside his room. Please follow the guidelines for removing the PPE before you leave the room. Gloves first, then the gown (leave it inside the hamper in the room), then the mask and then wash your hands with soap and water. For extra measure if you like, use the Purell hand cleaner in his room. Don't touch any surfaces on your way out.

Do not leave the room wearing PPE once you have entered. Once inside, your PPE is considered contaminated.

And, if there is ever a time when you have an infection from another organism, MRSA, being the opportunistic beast that it is, will step right in there and then it will be harmful to you. It can infect your skin, your blood, your eyes, your nose, your respiratory system...need I say more?

FYI: Do not give your grandfather colloidal silver or anything else not approved by his physician. Silver is not an element found in the body, has no known function and can be toxic.

You can spread his MRSA to other patients in the hospital and some bacteria that you may carry also could make your grandfather sicker. I went through this a couple of years ago with my mother. It was hard, but MRSA can kill the elderly. It is better to be safe than sorry. I hope your grandfather gets better soon.

It's to protect both of you. He doesn't need a secondary infection and you don't want to catch or spread it. MRSA has been around for years but it's more common and more resistant now.
