I believe the earth to be 100's of millions of years old. I've seen and heard that it is only 5000 or 6000 years old. Where is this info? How did they get it? I need someone to explain. I am a Christian and do read my Bible. Please, no "there is no God' or similar remarks.

It is unfortunate that the Bible was removed from public schools in 1962, and since that date evolution has been the only thing taught to children. They have never even been given to option of looking at an alternative. All of a sudden they meet some Christians are are confronted with the idea that there is an alternative, that God created this universe for a purpose. It is so difficult for people to unlearn the things they have been taught since childhood, that they try and merge evolution into creation and come up with a compromise. What needs to happen is you need to accept one or the other, they don't fit together. You sound like you are seriously searching this out, so I would suggest that you pray and ask God to give you wisdom and then read the story in the first couple of chapters of Genesis and see what the Bible says. If you have any questions about how things fit together there are a number of good creation websites that can give you guidance. You can also email me, or I am sure most other YA members who believe in creation and we will try and help. Until you fully understand what creation truly teaches don't reject it. After you get the whole picture, then decide.

A long time ago someone added up all the ages in the Bible and determined that the world is just over 6,000 years old. I don't think the book itself says that number specifically, but that's generally the accepted figure among creationists who take the Bible literally.

The age of the Earth accepted by the scientific community is 4.6 billion years. They have a lot of evidence to prove that it's at LEAST four billion. Not too many people have a problem with that figure outside of the Bible literalists and Intelligent Design people. Even a lot of Christians accept that as being the age of the Earth.

They try to determine how old the Earth is by going back through the geneologies mentioned in the Bible, all the way back to Adam and Eve. This is approximately 5000-6000 years worth of lifetime generations. According to them, man was created at about the time that the Earth was formed.

Some theologians have attempted to use the geneologies in the bible to find out when God created the earth. Considering how long people lived in the old testament and the fact that the bible never mentions exactly how long Adam and Eve lived in the garden before their fall, its something scholars will never really know, so its just conjecture. I also am christian, and I believe the world is much older than biblical scholars say it is, but those scholars aren't infallible.

People who take the Bible word-for-word literally came up with the about 6000 years old model by calculating the geneologies in the Bible.

There are plenty of Christians like you that believe that some things in the Bible are symbolic and assume the earth is much, much older than that.

From what I understand, don't quote me on this, is that they add up the approx. age of each of the people and geneologies described in the Old Testament, and add all the people together back to the story of Genesis. They then add about 2000 years for the time after Jesus and shazam! It lands somewhere between 5000 and 10000 years old, although most are around 6000.

From what I have heard, Creationists claim that the earth is only that old. I do not believe that they have any proof of this --they need to believe this to fit their ideas. I would be interested in seeing proof of their ideas. And I mean scientific proof --not words twisted or taken out of context.

I definitely believe there is a god -- I think evolution is the way he chose to have things develop.

The Bible is interpreted in whatever way the reader choses. Some people believe everything in there literally; others believe that they are stories to illustrate a particular idea. I do not think there is one"right" way to believe, but others think that their way is the only way.

I believe that the earth is about 12,006 years old. I take this from my Sunday School class. that is where I learned. if you match up the amount of years the people live and the events mentioned, you get a number close to this. I will pray for you to understand this and for the Lord to help you find the light.

History is only about 5000 years old so mankind could not have existed much more than 1000 years before that since civilization develops very quickly and the benefits thereof such as writing, agriculture, transportation craft, etc.
