depends how close to manhatten you want to be, i was there for new year and stayed at a red roof inn, in secaucus new jersey, they have a chain of hotels. i think the one i stayed in averages around $45 a night, but i paid up to $120 because it was new year. go to tripadvisor.com

there was a very good bus service just a few minutes walk away which took you into the centre of manhatten, buses ran on time and at certain times in the evening stopped right outside the hotel

The Regency Inn & Suites on 34th next to the Burger King and Wendy's. Its a few blocks from Broadway and you can see the Empire State Building very clearly from the front door. I stayed there on New Year's Eve and it was only $250/night. All the other hotels we find around there were all over $500. It's very close to everything, within walking distance. Have fun.

I've heard priceline is pretty good for NYC. The 2 star hotels I've stayed at were always pretty good for me. Just beware if you think you might cancel or have more than 2 people staying in the room. anywhere in Midtown (preferable) or downtown should be good.
