Recently i found both my budgies dead next to each other on the cage floor. I dont understand how this could be, the one bird was 9 the other was young 2ish. I took great care of them and they had a big cage. What could i have possible done that would make them both end up dead? I am in tears everyday thinking about it!

For them both to die at the same time, my guess it was fumes from something - as Ana said, perhaps from cooking with a teflon pan. There are many things around the house that we take for granted as being safe, but are lethal to our birds.

Something else could have been mouldy or contaminated seed. Did the seed have a mouldy smell?

An expensive thing to do in cases like this, where healthy birds die suddenly is to have an autopsy done by a bird vet. Its good to know what killed them so it doesn't happen again to your next birds.

It is highly unlikely that your birds died of bird flu! If your birds are not exposed to the feces and urine of wild birds, they cannot have caught the bird flu!!!!!

I am so sorry for your loss. I know how it hurts to lose a beloved pet.

It is probably too late now but it would have been helpful to have had your vet do a necropsy (autopsy) on both of your birds. Without it, there is really no way to know what killed them.

Should you think about getting another bird, please use a good disinfectant on the cage(s). I would throw away any toys and sterilize all feeding dishes.

Good luck to you.

Cooking with Teflon could have done it, also air freshners, candles, incense, etc, is awful for your birds and can drop them dead. The only way they would have the bird flu is if they came in contact with a bird with it directly and while there haven't been any major cases documented in the US, its more than likely not the problem!

Have you been cooking with Teflon pans? a.k.a. the pans with the built in nonstick stuff? If you do, the pans could have overheated and the nonstick layer started to melt, releasing a type of vapor that is toxic to newborns and birds. This happened with my bird, however I was able to detect his listlessness before he got too bad and nursed him back to health and because your birds are smaller and don't have as strong of a respiratory system, they may have died with no warning. So if you are planning to get more birds, stop cooking with the Teflon!!!

They could have had the bird flu. And I actually mean that. It would be highly unusual for them both to just die. It was definatly a sickness.

p.s. Sorry for you're loss.
You can always get a new bird, just thoroughly clean the cage first. And don't use any of the same toys of materials.

Anything could of killed them, take them to the vet one last time, and ask the vet what killed them.
