In all honesty, it's really a matter of self-discipline, but there are things that will help. With me, the patch was effective at curbing my nicotine cravings.

The main thing to remember is this... If friends, family, or peers are pressuring you to quit smoking, your attempts will most likely fail. The only way to quit smoking is if you truly desire to do it. Don't do it just because mom, little sister, or grandpa is pushing you into it. Make sure you want to do it first, and then do it for yourself!

That varies for different people.

I believe the most effective for me (over 1 year now) has been chewing the Nicorette gum.

Having tried laser treatments, the patch and cold turkey, the gum is the best result I've had.

Well...Iwas a 12 year smoker, smoking 3 1/2 packs per day when I quit...I cried...layed in bed...broke a couple of pictures on the wall when my hubby made mention of my charming personality...but you know what?...I made up my mind I was going to do it no matter how difficult it was to do it...I wanted to be a healthy mom/grandma....not some snotty black tar filled lunged lady that couldn't have any real quality of life for myself and family....I quit cold turkey...sorry....I know no other way but to resolve yourself that you can. I quit when I was 26...I am now 47...I go out and throw baseballs and fly kites with my grandsons, etc....when I smoked...I sounded like a freight train when I slept...I know I would not be having this kind of a relationship with my grandsons today had I not quit...Good luck.

P.S. So many say not to do it for others....I disagree, I was pregnant when I quit...it was all about others for me...As awful as it is...I loved to smoke...I don't know if I ever could have done it just for myself...If I would have waited to do it just for myself...I don't know if I ever would have honestly.

For me, it's Chantix. I tried using the patch and Welbutrin several times before and failed. In Aug. I started Chantix, I cheated once in Sept. but haven't had a smoke since then. I stopped taking the pills in Oct., and since then I've been doing really good. I've never actually lasted this long before, so I'm very proud of myself.
Good Luck to you!

I can't tell you how to actually quit, but I've noticed that people who tell people that they're quitting stick to it more (goes for losing weight as well). Tell everyone you know - family, friends, co-workers - and people you don't really know - the cashier at the supermarket, your mailman, your neighbor that you never talk to. That way, people will ask you about it all the time and you'll feel like you have to keep it up or you'll be a disappointment.

Good luck and congrats on quitting!!

My wife has been using 'the patch.' When I went with her to the drugggist, I asked for the INDUSTRIAL STRENGHT patch. OUCH that hurt! It works though. For different folks, different things work. Try doing a google.com search on stop smoking.
Good luck and blessings to you for wanting to quit!
