will you lose your financial aid award? Or what happens in this case? if u already have a set award would you lose it or just wait until you reapply to try for more next year

No worries until the next year. I had this happen. You do not have to fill out the paperwork again until the following January. The FAFSA is based on your prior year's taxes and your marital status at the time the paperwork is filled out.

I am a Director of Financial Aid and a student can not change their marital status to married after they have completed a FAFSA so just wait until the new financial aid year. This will make you independed if you were not already and my increase or decrease the amount of aid you were previously eligible for due to a change in family income and number of people.

The last answer is right - however, if by marrying the person you would be classified as "independent" and thus potentially gain more funding, you can go to your financial aid advisor and file an ammendment to your FAFSA reflecting your new circumstances.

Go talk to someone, see if your marriage works for you or against you, and then decide if you should leave it alone until the following year or let them refigure your award.
