My BF blames himself for everything. He also comes from a large family who treat him like the family scapegoat. He feels that it is his fault that the dog died. Guilty that he could have done more.
Guilty that all of his siblings are moving away and that he would like to do this as well but feels that he would be abandoning his parents. That everyone else has left them and now he is going to be the really bad guy for leaving. I am sure that they don't feel this way but he brings these thoughts on to himself. How do I help him stop this maddness?

it will help if you listen and make him think about the good he has done.
at this time do not push a relationship. he needs to get better to like himself to truly love others. so help him by, listening. going out for walk and talking bout the sky, things he has done right.
what make him feel like he has done right things
what he wants to do with his life. then help him go that way to see he can succeed

Good advice from Lyon, but let me add one more piece of advice. If your BF does not want help or willing to help himself, I suggest you reconsider your relationship with him. Why? Because it WILL become worse as he grows older and if you plan on a future with him, resolve it NOW.

See a therapist. He needs to realign his thought patterns and if he's in as deep as you decribed him (blames himself for EVERYTHING) then he needs professional help.

Otherwise you can pick up a psychology book yourself and learn it yourself (note: may take years :-P) then talk him out of his mental rut.
