I just got a New Year's gift of a speeding ticket in New York State. I have an Ontario license. How much can they really do to me? Can I get out of it by mail? I won't be able to show up in person for court, since that's 1000 kms. away! What does it take for them to drop something like this? Will they just get tired after a while after I please not guilty? If they don't give in, can this have effects on my Ontario license? Anyone know from personal experience? Please give me your sources. Thank you.

If you don't deal with it, don't bother going back to new York State because an arrest warrant will be issued for your arrest. Your best bet would be to either hire an attorney to represent you if you actually feel you were not speeding, or plead it out, pay your fine and move on with your life if you were. Having written over a thousand speeding tickets in my last two years, working traffic 16 hours a month and never having lost one in court, I can tell you that, if you were speeding, you're not going to beat the ticket.

Call the NYS bar association. Get a lawyer! Spend your money on a lawyer to get the best advice now. Follow the lawyer's advice. Or you can mess around and you will spend your money-- much more money-- later. It doesn't matter if your 'licence' is from Ontario. 'They' use a computerized database nowadays it's called NDR. It never forgets.

You must of been doing in excess of 95mph somewhere in new york state to have an mandatory court date.

Just pay the ticket. You just end up spending more money fighting it and going back and forth.

You speed, you pay.

What you do is just send a money order for five dollars over the ticket amount and they will send you a check back for the five dollars however NEVER cash the check. This way you won't get points on your license. (Ex. The ticket is 250.00 send a money order or check for 255.00)
