Which of the two takes better-quality pictures, especially in not-so-ideal conditions such as low light?

Or, is there another digital camera (non-SLR, please) that takes even better quality pictures than those two cameras?

Many thanks in advance for your help! :)

I work with digital cameras everyday and I would pick the 800is over the 900 any day. The only problem with the 800 for my business is keeping it in stock. The 900 is a very good camera because it has a virtually indestructible body, but all the specs on both cameras are the same. Except for the mp(10 vs. 7). That will not make much of a difference unless you blow up picture to be larger than poster size. These cameras will do the same in low light situations. They both posses the DigicIII processor. The only reason people buy the 800is over the 900 is because of the image stabilization. You would think if canon was going to make a $500 camera it would have came with image stabilization, but it didn't.

The 800is is worth much more than the 900 in my opinion. Hope this helps.

The Canon SD models are very good. I have the SD700 IS and it's a great little camera.
The SD800 IS is just a minor upgrade and has a wide-angle lens (only so-so).
The SD900 has no IS, just more megapixels.
They come supplied with a rechargeable Lithium battery and charger.
I would probably choose the SD900 over the 800 IS.

For low-light photography...also look at the Fujifilm F30 or F31fd. No other compact camera can match it's noise-free, high ISO performance (ISO 800 &1600) handheld, no flash...for low light indoor shots (parties, concerts, family gatherings, museums etc).
It would be worth considering it, just for these capabilities alone.
And it has an amazing battery life of up to 580 shots.

I just answered the same question for someone else and said that I'd lean towards the SD900, if the cost was not going to scare you away. Mostly, the fact that the sensor is about twice as big makes it more attractive to me.

Here is the link to the other question where you can read my answer as well as the answers of anyone else who might come along and miss your question.
