There's quite a few differences, and which is better is a matter of opinion. If I told you one or the other is better, it would be a lie considering what is better to me may not be better to you.

However, I can help you decide what is better for you:

Main Internet Explorer 7 Advantages over FireFox
1. Now more CSS Compliant (means more pages appear as they should).
2. Most websites are designed for IE, so about 95% sites will appear the way they should.
3. ActiveX functionality/scripting (Firefox does not have ActiveX, many people consider it a security risk.)
4. Windows Update only works with ActiveX (see 3).

Main Firefox 2.0 Advantages:
1. Session Saving. If you close your browser, all your tabs (a feature in both browsers) will continue to appear.
2. Extensions! You can install any extensions, such as an e-mail checker, weather checker, session saving, tab browsing, mouse gestures (cool once you get used to them), speed boosts, and more. There's also a plugin called IETabs that lets you view a page using IE technology (for compatibility reasons) within firefox, letting you get the best of both worlds.
3. Follows the standards.
4. Designed with security in mind from the beginning. Usually more secure. (IE7 was designed just as a browser, and security was added to it later.)
5. 99% of the time, displays a site as it should appear.
6. More customizable without additional software that may slow down your computer. Excellent for the power user who wants everything configured their way.
7. Cross-platform. If you ever use a Mac or Linux, you'll have a browser you're familiar with.

Firefox is better because Internet Explorer 7 is targeted most out of all browsers for viruses. Firefox is 2nd. Netscape is last. Explorer is slower. I'm using Mozilla right now.
Because Mozilla doesn't have all of the right programs with it, it can't read all videos, so it gives you the option to install the programs needed. And I think it comes with it's own ZIP program, or some type of download notebook that tells you what you downloaded and you can remove the download or you can install it.

Some of the above answers that Firefox can't run everything that IE 7 is true, but Firefox gives you the option to download it or not when you come to the screen. I haven't had ANY problems with Firefox. IE 7 has made my laptop slow! And IE 7 is a HUGE download. It takes up a lot K and MB!
For my school email, I have to use Firefox instead of IE 7 because it wants to send an error report and it closes all of the windows. I had the same problem on my desktop computer, and nothing has gone wrong with Firefox. Some webpages are viewed differently that with IE 7. IE 7 already comes with the features installed, and some that you don't need. Firefox comes with a few features installed, and you can choose what you need when you come to the bridge. Firefox also comes with it's own pop up blocker. Firefox is becoming better than IE 7 because if you notice, on some downloads and webpages are now announcing that their content is compatible with Firefox, which means it's getting popular. A sign that it's overruling IE 7. FIREFOX ROX MY SOX!

Firefox 2 is the better choice. As other users have stated, IE7 is basically a FF clone. Also, Firefox is much more flexible. Because anyone can make extensions for it, you can get a lot more. Also, you can change the look of FF, something that a lot of users like.

Firefox is more secure, though IE is faster. Opera 9 is in the middle of both. Some people who say IE say so because of its inability to run ActiveX scripts. The truth is, you can download an extension for Firefox so that you can open a website using IE within FF, making it more secure. One other nifty FF 2 feature is it has an automatic spell checker built in.

I use Firefox because of its reliability and flexibility. Many people use IE because it's a 'name brand.' Opera 9 is also out there. The choice is yours... as long as you choose Firefox ☺

Most professionals agree that Firefox is the all around better browser, for example:

These other reviewers also agree that Firefox is better

Here is the historical and present values of security holes with IE & Firefox side by side
http://www.webdevout.net/security_summary.php#vulnerabilities

Because IE has more open security holes it is much easier to steal your ID
http://secunia.com/Internet_Explorer_Arbitrary_Content_Disclosure_Vulnerability_Test/

Even the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team recommends you not use IE:
"There are a number of significant vulnerabilities in technologies related to the IE domain/zone...It is possible to reduce exposure to these vulnerabilities by using a different web browser"
http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/713878

IE depends on ActiveX for some features to work, but it can be very dangerous. Here is what Microsoft says about ActiveX:

"An ActiveX control can be an extremely insecure way to provide a feature...From the moment a user downloads an ActiveX control, the control may be vulnerable to attack..."
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/workshop/components/activex/security.asp

IE 6 & 7 support webstandards very poorly
http://webstandards.org/files/acid2/test.html

There is much more, but I think you get the idea

When it comes to originality, Firefox wins. If you compare IE 7 to Firefox, Microsoft completely copied what Firefox had created. So I would say that Firefox is better only because they had the original ideas for design that Microsoft stole and altered a little bit to create IE 7.

Good Luck!!

FireFox is way better. Also, there are some things, like video files (launch.yahoo.com) that won't work correctly with FireFox. You have to go to the FireFox forums and get a fix for it, but it's a simply operation. Aside from that.... FireFox > IE

Internet Explorer 7 ... or any other version for that matter

Microsoft created Windows and engineers all other applications with precision to suit. Through their reporting process they update and provide patches to ensure their products are hack free and their customers have trouble free use.

Would you buy a Mazda or Toyota product to fit on a Ford?

At the end of the day its up to each person and their personal preference however, I still feel I.E.7 is more superior product to Firefox 2.0

I know Firefox is what kids use at school to get past security and go on myspace. But I really don't know the difference. I think there is none, because both have access to a variety of sites
