If you want the best food out there try Natural Balance. Science Diet is overly publicized because all the vets get kickbacks for selling the garbage. So to answer you question, nothing at all is special about it.

Well when you look at cat food there are lets say different levels. There is the grocery stores own brand, consider that eating out of a garbage can, "upper" grocery store brands like Iams, consider that McD's. Then you move to pet store brands and now you branch into "traditional" and "holistic". On the more "traditional" side you have things like Science Diet and Nutrience, consider that like a generally balanced home cooked meal. On the more holistic side you have Innova, Wellness and raw foods consider that a balanced home cooked meal made with foods from a natural or health food store. Then you move into foods only available from the vet, like Medical, consider that having a nutrionist come to your house and cook for you.
The choice is up to you. I use Medical but use Science Diet when I don't have time to swing by the vets office.

It has a lot of research behind it, so that is why it is usually highly recommended.
I personally don't think its all that great, and I think there is better out there.
I use Nutro Natural Choice (canned and dry) and Iams Multi-Cat (dry) for my crew. They all do great on it, no one is overweight ( I do not free feed) no one has hair balls, no one gets diarrhea, they all have great shiny coats with little shedding.
I tried Science Diet for a while and I just didn't see the same results.
With cat food (especially dry kibble) you get what you pay for. The more expensive brands use a more expensive protein source. Cheap dry food = cheap protein source. Don't skimp on your cats diet.

There is nothing great about it at all. The first ingredient is by-product meat and the next two are corn products. Cats should have 2/3 or 60% of their diet in quality meat protein and fillers such as brown rice, millet, oat, pea etc. - more wholesome than corn. It is also one of the most expensive cat foods you can buy at $2.40 per lb.
Eagle Pack, Natural Balance, Solid Gold, Felidae, CA Natural are much better foods and meet the criteria of wholesome high quality protein and less "filler" than the SD. Solid Gold is around $1.50 per lb., Natural Balance $1.75, CA Natural is $2.40 and Felidae is $2.10 per lb.
