Religion come from a French word "religare" meaning to restrain or to tie back. Religious is addressed to a person practicing religion. I do not know how one can be fooled by those words. However, I would like to tell you that when God gave man his "free will", he is endowed with the power of intention which means man has all the right to make his own destiny. God's presence in everyone are his grace if you live righteously and His curse on your wickedness. That "power of intention" learned by few have affected a lot of people negatively when religion came to restrain man's freedom. Then the deception that you are telling had made this world a cursed world.

The more accurate definition of "religion" is what one does to obtain recognition by that supernatural power which one believes exists. Only Christianity says that one cannot ever do anything to get God's attention because you already have it . . . in the form of His righteous indignation at your disobedience.
In other words, yes, religions believe in God. But it does them no good because they turn around and teach about the God THEY believe in instead of the One who actually exists.
Christianity says it's not what you know but who you know, or Who you know. It's a relationship; Jesus already did the religious work stuff.

why do so many people seem to think that what a dictionary says defines what people feel, say, do, or believe?

if a dictionary was published that said the definition of the word "God" is a radioactive purple floating elephant, that does not suddenly mean that all the people who say they "believe in God" believe in a radioactive purple floating elephant.

Definitions of all things are fairly fluid. Just because you picked your fav definition of a word does not mean that its the current and used one.
