They were wrong about stealing land from Native Americans and Mexicans, but if we hadn’t America would be significantly weaker country. They were wrong about slavery, but if it weren’t for slavery America wouldn’t have grown so fast economically. They were wrong about segregation, but if it were for segregation, African-Americans would never have been so united and develop culturally. (Don’t be naïve; Segregation had many positive effects. You had legendary authors and writers, passion running strong. They invented guitars, created rock, but like the rest of America, they’ve been on a steady cultural decline. Hip-hop, crime, etc...not to offend.)

But then you see that you have all these different cultures, and "mixing" of these cultures leads to clashing personalities, which some interpret as being a part of the greatest country in the world. I fail to see what's so great about it, though, when there are always people trying to think they are better than the next person no matter what. I perceive whole world in a downward spiral if things keep going the way they are.

So, they are right in some cases (advances in technology) and wrong in others (increased unemployment).

You can't blame them. More power = more denied responsibility.

I don't know what you're asking. Conservatives--and I consider myself one of them--believe about history the following: the so-called "progress" that society makes through post-modern conceptions of the good society and invididual are most often incdecent and regressive. In other words, we want things to fundamentally be as they used to be.

There are exceptions, of course. We like civil rights but we don't like feminism. We like that disabled people have better lives now but we don't like identity politics. We like new technology that helps us live better lives but we don't like how now there's cloning, abortion, and stem cell research.

LIberals believe that progress is inevitable. So, for them, inevitably gays will get to marry. Conservatives say that's baloney--we've held onto ideas like God and the traditional family through strong historical challenges precisely because Marxism is not inevitable. In fact, the capitalistic success of the west is a stick in the eye of Marx.

So about your points on indians and blacks...

I'm glad there's no segregation and slavery. Period. But I roo the fact that now we've got morons like Jessee Jackson and Al Sharpton preaching black power politics. It's like technology. Ultimately I'm glad things have changed but we've picked up some nasty habits. It's a snowball effect--the intent is good but the consequences are too far-reaching. So how to you stop these consequnces from hurting society? I don't know. I just don't know.

Is this Pick-On-Conservatives Day? You make some assumptions that conservatives feel certain ways about human progression and yet I don't know how you can accurately arrive at that conclusion. Do you speak for all conservatives?

Just because something wrong led to something right doesn't mean the wrong is right.

They're still wrong.
