Make sure you put batteries in right place..for example: one battery up side and other down side (like mine).
If new batteries..is it rechargeable batteries? if so, did you charge or re-charge new rechargeable batteries before using them?
If new batteries--not rechargeable, but regular ones, cheap store brands not always work good...so try Duracell or Energizer (my fav is Duracell)....
Did you turn your camera on right? Did you ever drop the camera? Did you close the battery "door" shut right?

The most obvious answer, is that you installed the batteries, incorrectly. Take them out again, study the manual, and see which way they go in. I'm assuming the batteries are new and the correct type and voltage.

if batteries are a cheap brand they wont work. it happend to me with my camera.

if batterie type is correct try putting in different to what is marked mine i have to i have kodak easyshare
