I am Canadian and live within 20 minutes of the Canada/US border and cross frequently. If you are driving into the US, as a US citizen, you will need 2 pieces of ID, at least one having a photo. YOU DO NOT NEED A PASSPORT! Driver's Licence and Birth Certificate are great. However, starting in 2008 (and there is still confusion on exactly when), you WILL need a US Passport - not to get into Canada, but to get back into the US. This will be a Homeland Security requirement. The legislation in the Congress is still pending.
As of Jan 1, 2007, you DO need a passport if you FLYING back into the U.S.

Yes. As of January, 2007, all US citizens are required to carry and present a valid passport upon leaving and entering the US. This includes going to Mexico and Canada.
Passport applications are available at any US Post Office, and many township offices throughout the country. You will need 2 small passport sized photos of your uncovered head and face. Some Post Offices can take them for you on site.
The cost for a passport has increased. Expect to spend about $100 for a new passport, less if you are renewing, and more if you need expedited service. Normal delivery is 6 weeks.

that is not a Canadian initiative surely, that's a US initiative. As of this summer time the U. S. is requiring all persons who enter the U. S. by land, inclusive of Canadians, to have a valid passport. they are already requiring all who fly into the U. S. to have passports and function been for it gradual now. in fact, the only reason Canada is requiring human beings to have passports while they enter Canada is so as that all of us understand that they a passport with them to get decrease back into the U. S.. If we did not examine and make optimistic human beings had passports getting into Canada then countless us electorate or others could be caught right here because of the fact they could not get decrease back into the U. S.. So, mutually as we don't like it the two, if somebody is to be blamed then inspect the U. S. government first. in the event that they did not require it to get into the U. S. then Canada does not have had to alter that is regulations too and issues could shop on as earlier.

By air, you require a passport to enter and re-enter the USA effective January 23, 2007.
By land and sea you will require a passport as of January 2008, at the earliest to enter/re-enter USA.
To come to Canada everything is as normal for now. The Western Hemisphere Travel Inititive is an American based law which is why it is only to enter and re-enter that country.
Our countries do get along, but sadly there will be people that try and take advantage of that situtation on order to harm our populations.

Going into Canada you won't. Going back to the USA you will. Your government is initiating this as part of its anti-terrorism operation.
