Windows XP promised so many things, but it was riddled with security holes and people got tons of Spyware and other threats. Now we are armed with disbelief.
We've seen the disaster that Microsoft called "Internet Explorer 7". We've seen our applications BROKEN by it. We've seen our internet connections halted by it. Basically, it appears that Microsoft has screwed up BIG TIME.
Apple still only gets a 5% market share. It still does not support the dozens of applications that every PC user already owns. Why does Microsoft and Apple seem to think that we are going to BELLY UP and buy all new programs again. Let's face it, a computer with Windows XP is cheap, so why would we run off any pay for everything again.
OK, here is my personal record of Microsoft purchases over the years.
- MS-DOS 5
- MS-DOS 6
- Windows 3.1
- Windows 3.1.1
- Microsoft Office 4
- Windows 95 (upgrade)
- Windows 96 (OEM)
- Microsoft Office 95 (standard)
- Microsoft Publisher 95
- Microsoft Oiffice 97 (Professional)
- Microsoft Publishier 98
- Windows 98 (upgrade)
- Microsoft Office 2000
- Windows ME (upgrade)
- Windows 98 (OEM)
- Windows 2000
- Windows 2000 Server
- Windows XP (home)
Do the math, I've paid my dues. I will probably be sticking with Windows XP until mid 2008 at this point. I expect all of these compatibility issues FIXED.
I hear that Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 won't work with Internet Explorer 7, or Windows Media Player 11, or Windows Vista. Any of those combinations, and it's DONE.
I have seen that several versions of QuickBooks won't work with Internet Explorer 7, and that is the basis of Windows Vista. So why would I be happy about having to buy a $200 software package AGAIN? Of course, QuickBooks isn't made for Mac OS.
Good luck and Happy Computing!

For most people XP does exactly what they need and there is really no need to spend hundreds on a new OS. One problem initially will be lack of drivers till companies release updated drivers. Even though vista is supposed to be more secure there has been potential security exploits found and current antivirus programs don't work on vista. It does take a bit more power in your PC to run it but this jump in requirements isn't really that much compared with upgrades in the past from ME to XP etc. That being said minumum requrements should be taken with a pinch of salt as XP runs on 128mb but is slow unless you have at least 512mb.
I want vista as I have a 64bit laptop and the version of windws I have is 32bit. I will get a free upgrade to vista from dell so I have nothing to lose.
Vista will probably be hyped up when it is released, I also agree with what you say about mac os looking better, wish it ran on pcs

Microsoft are on the way down slowly
Vista, for what I have read, isn't very good at all, it will only get real hype when more pcs are shipped with it.
It is also a very poor rip off of apples OSX with none of the flair and stability.
I see what you mean though, it does seem like Microsofts publiciry machine is broken.
their attack on the ipod and itunes was very muted in the UK
perhaps media just don't want to know
NB When mac unvield OSX all those years ago there was a similar compatablitity issue. many mac users (myself included) were reticent to goto OSX because none of our progs would run and the OSX was power hungry so that if you didn't have a new mac the os would suck all the power out of your machine.
Mac had a simple way of bypassing this in Classic mode
you could simply use OSX and when you wanted to run an older programme the old os( started up within OSX
Clever, perhaps microsoft should do the same

There are a lot of reasons...
First of all, Windows XP is the best version of Windows yet and is good enough for many people. Additionally, some people feel XP is better than Vista. While you could certainly make a similar comparison between XP and 2000 (not ME), when XP came out, there was one big difference back then: Most people had Windows 9X (95, 98, ME) and not 2000.
Second, many people have heard about the different features Microsoft was going to include with Vista and did not. The result is that some people simply find all of this terribly disappointing.
Third, like with all major Windows releases there are going to be some compatibility problems. However, this time it will be worse for two reasons. 1) Microsoft is really trying to push greater security this time and that will make the compatibility problems worse. 2) Microsoft is expected to push the 64-bit version this time and 64-bit Windows (be it Vista or XP) has additional compatiblity problems with 32-bit Windows.
Fourth, Vista's increased security is going to make people change their computing habits a bit and people don't like that.
Fifth, I would say that anti-Microsoft sentiment (be it right or wrong) is stronger now than when Windows XP came out.
Sixth, I would say that people are more familiar with the "alternatives" these days (like Linux and Mac OS). So, the question becomes, if Microsoft is going to make them change their computing habits and/or software, then why not just go to Linux or the Mac?
Seventh, it appears to many people that Vista costs more than XP. Look at the Ultimate Edition of Vista ($400) in comparison to the Home Edition of Windows XP ($200). This isn't exactly a fair comparison, since the Ultimate edition will have a number of features that were separate for XP (think about Plus ($20), the UNIX add-on ($20), etc...). Still people are making this comparison anyway and it makes Vista look more expensive. Even without this comparison, Linux distributions are generally $0 and Mac OS is $130.
Eighth, for the cost of Windows Vista, many people aren't getting some of their favorite OS features. Like for UNIX people virtual desktops is not available. (At least, I didn't see it in my beta copy of Windows Vista. Also, in all fairness to Microsoft, Virtual desktops was a free add-on for Windows XP and they will probably make it available for Vista.)
That said... I personally like Windows Vista better than XP and I didn't encounter many compatibility problems. I even like a couple of things about it better than Mac OS (though I also like some things about Mac OS better). Also, SOME anti-virus/firewall companies will supposedly be giving away free updates to their products to users of Windows Vista. Though, I really think Microsoft needs to work on their image quite a bit in order to help them sell this particular upgrade.

When XP came out, it was great because it was such an improvement right when you get it. You look at your desktop and the colors are awesome, everything seems smooth (at least until windows crashes! :P) But Windows had popularity from the start, I'm not sure as to why mac's weren't a hit. Maybe because windows had more programs to run, which is probably why people stick with XP now compared to mac.

Cause it's just come out and the rest of the world hasn't had time to catch up with the new software.
XP got praise because it was a gear change up from Win95 and WinME. A massively improved product that was much more stable than its predecessors.
Vista is less of a jump.. XP is still good so why "upgrade" and wait for software apps to catch up whilst going through a load of pain. Leave it for a year and then see how things look.

Hey there,
Are you wondering how to downoad for free Flight Simulator X? You can get it for free here: http://bit.ly/1p0vGOu
it's a perfectly working link, no scam!
If you are an aviation enthusiast, this flight simulator is perfect for you. You can virtually fly as a pilot and travel everywhere. This flight game may have a steep learning curve like a more complicated aircraft model, but once you get comfortable with it, I am sure you are going to have a great time.

Windows vista does seem to have much cooler options then xp came out with, and security is suppose to be much better. But I have also used it and none of my programs worked on it. I use earthlink and not even that was compatible.

XP was super popular because ME made it look like the gods gift to windows.
Windows ME was the WORST version of windows ever to be made. It was not compatable with much software at all, and opening 2 internet explorer windows caused you to get "out of memory" errors even with a gig of RAM.
