RE:
Can You Really Use A Plastic Soda Bottle As A Gun Silencer?
Me & a buddy cannot agree on if this is true or not. In the movies you see the bad guys tape a plastic 2-liter type bottle to the end of a gun & they use it as a silencer . . . . .do you think it would really work?

It works, but I use a 20 oz. plastic pop bottle, cut about a 2" hole in the bottom, then fill it with fiberglass insulation, but do not pack it to tightly.
Tape the top, the end you drink from to the muzzle, try to line up the hole you cut in the bottom so when you fire the bullet exits through that hole.
This only works for a couple shots, after that you will have to put more insulation in the bottle again, also be careful I believe this is illegal in some states.

Many years ago, in the mid 1980's, (a different era as far as what the BATF would allow) a device was marketed by Cobray company that allowed you to screw a soda bottle onto the end of a .22 rifle or any one of Cobray's MAC pistols or submachineguns. I got to try one mounted on a Mitchell arms
AK-22 .22 cal. rifle.
Did it silence the weapon?
No.
Did it change the sound of the discharge?
Yes.
It made the gun sound as if each shot was a strike against a big plastic drum. PONK! PONK! PONK!
Compared to the "silencers"(sound supressors) offered commercially these days (and even then) it's lousy.

It's not the soda bottle, it's shooting through a bottle filled with water that creates the noise suppression. It's about as equal to a silencer which still makes noise, something like popcorn popping.

It works but only on a small caliber weapon, .22 optimally but I suppose it would work on anything up to say 9mm carbine.
Doesn't have to be a 2 liter also, 20 oz or larger works.
In real life though it only works for one shot, and destroys your ability to aim properly and the accuracy of the round. "Silencer" is also a misnomer, definitely not silent but far quieter than unsuppressed.

Only if your willing to go to federal prison...then yes Virginia...there is a plastic 2-liter type bottle silencer. You need to fill it with a expanding insulation then get a tight lock on the end of your barrel...Then here is the kicker, you need to use sub sonic ammo.

It will It will work, but rather poorly. It can be legal as long as you submit an ATF form 1. As others have said, it will make the weapon clumsy, and the bottle will not last long.
