My hair was pencil straight this afternoon, I went to the shore to see a friend and it was raining and humid. My hair had curled while I was there. Why does hair react to humidity? Thanks.

It's due to the moisture in the air. Just like when you get out of the shower, your hair goes to its natural wave (whether its straight or crimped curly) and will dry that way if you leave it.

Hair is actually porous and has an affinity for water. So, in humid weather, it absorbs moisture and the strands swell up at some places, giving hair that curly, fizzy, annoying appearance.

When hair is wet the cortex swells and the edges of the cuticle scales tend to lift.
