I didn't say I don't speak english...! I also know the difference between she and he. In the book does'n specify if it's a female or a male dog, is a book for training dogs!!!! so it asks you about your dog and naturally selects the she or her... also in several magazines for dogs is the same. it seems nobody has noticed it.... but thanks for all your answers anyway!

Perhaps the author of the book had a female dog? I have read many books on dog training and never encountered this problem. We usually use the male term or it but the author may feel it is distant to refer to an animal with a "personality" as it. In English we don't classify words as feminine, masculine or neuter term so pet cannot be feminine.
Are you talking about Spanish? Although 'mascota'(pet) is a feminine word 'perro'(dog) is masculine. A possible explanation could be that we consider pets to share characteristics which we also attribute to mostly the female gender and treat them likewise. Some books just use the plural, in masculine form, to convey the message that they are referring to the species as a whole.

You have a decent English level? Really?

English does not use feminine and masculine articles like spanish. When people don't know the sex of a dog they guess. They say "he" as much as "she."

One pronoun is just as good as another in a training book. If you're talking about a specific dog and it happens to be male, then you would be wrong. But if you are just referring to a general dog, you can use "his," or "her" or "his/her" but the last one is pretty awkward.

For a while the term for everything has been his/him/he. But evidently people are offended by it or something. I doubt many americans know the gender of words these days.

And I mean when talking about dogs in general by the way.

english does not have the same gender restrictions (palabras masulino y femenino) as spanish. english speakers occasionally will give nouns a gender for variety. so they don't have to call everything "it" or "the." also, when a person or animal has an undetermined gender, english speakers will usually call it "she" or "her."

its usually because in the begining of the book the author tells you that it is best to get a female dog. just like in cat books they tell you to get a male cat.
