It depends on how light you go , some people have to bleach if they have dark hair, bleaching isn't good for your hair, highlights should be done at a salon, so you don't ruin or mess it up by the stuff you can buy. I just had mine done today, and I've been doing it for 13 years, so once you start you usually won't stop so be prepared to highlight every 8-12 weeks depending on how your hair grows, nothing looks more tacky than people with 2-3 inch roots. Good luck

Nope. If its your first time save your money and go to a salon where they'll help you pick out a good color and give you tips on maintaining the look.
Doing it at home can cause some damage to your hair because you might not be able to time the lightner correctly where as a professional will know which highlight is good for you and the perfect timing for their hair type.

I have hair lights and it doesn't do anything to your hair. You don't have to worry about it being damaged or anything, but the difference is that I get mind done every year or 6 months because I have light close to brown highlights in my hair that no one can tell that they are growing out and I have curly hair so that also hides the growth.

If you highlight your hair it will fade depending on the product you use and the amount of color you apply to your hair. If you use a high lift color & only add a few peices it will blend when your hair grows out & look very much like your natural. On the other hand if you use bleach or apply a lot of color you will have blonde hair until it just grows out.

Highlights can mess you hair-
Why, you ask? Because you're bleaching your hair with an unknown color.
The best type of 'Lights' are low-lights. They are temporary and bleach-free. They stay in for a month and if you like them, get them highlighted in that color.
So, I guess basically you should get low-lights first. Then if you like 'em, get highlights.
Hope that helps!
Tell your friend good luck! :)
God bless!

Nope.
Not unless you bleach your hair prior to getting highlights.
