the one thing i am noticing when i search these questions is that many people dont realize that there are several types of deaf/ Deaf people. there are some that are totally and profoundly deaf and cannot hear a thing and then there are those who are identified as hard of hearing who with the help of a hearing aid or other device can hear some but not at the normal range of a hearing person.
now their thoughts: my husband is profoundly deaf and he said that when he thinks, he thinks in pictures and signs sign language is his first language.
i am hard of hearing and english being my first language i think just like hearing people do, in english-spoken language.

Deaf people would not actually think in words. Before everyone learns a language (sign language included) thoughts are more like emotions. You may not realize it but everyone, whether or not they know a language, thinks in emotions sometimes. That is why it is faster to think something than to say it. You can think of an extremely elaborate idea and it will only takes moments to think of it in your mind but it will take longer to explain it with words. It is because you are thinking with emotions and ideas rather than actual words. Another example is when you know the definition of a word completely, you know it like the back of your hand and you can use it properly in a sentence but when someone asks you the definition you "can't explain it." I hear people say it all the time, "its hard to explain." That is because they know the word in relation to the meaning that it corresponds to without being able to summarize a definition with more words. Quite often sentences are finished in the mind before they are finished with spoken words. So you know what you are going to say before you say it. You may notice that when you watch TV and you can hear the character's thoughts, they are in full sentences and perfectly formed. People dont always think this way so it is not possible to portray reality's style of thinking in a narrated TV show and get the point across. I hope this was helpful to you, although I know it is a bit confusing. I know how to answer you question......but I can't quite put it into words.......

I suppose if you were to be placed in a foreign country where they speak an unknown language to you, then you might get a deeper understanding to your question...

They think in the language they sign and read in! They are hearing impaired, not language impaired!
