Okay, I'm a theatre major and have been performing for a long time now. I've done numerous musicals and gotten leads, but I feel I'll never get cast in those "pretty parts" because I have a very deep voice. I've been told numerous times that my voice doesnt match my look. I'm ver petite and slender but my voice is very low and has a jazzy sound to it. I can comfortably sing an E above middle C but anything beyond that is really weak. I've heard many people tell me to use my "head voice" but I dont understand it. I hear women belt out really high notes and I just cant do it! How can I get there? Is it even possible?

Here is the problem, you are singing in your Raw Chest Voice or what people like to call belting. That's fine if you are a Soprano singing broadway; however, if you are truly a mezzo or alas a contralto you have no where to go. There are 4 areas in the human voice, Raw Chest, Chest, Head Voice and Whistle tones. The term passagio is used to discribe the change in registers. A mastery of the passagio is necessary for obtaining a full two octaves of vocal range that can be heard in a theatre. There is a difference between being heard and being able to phonate a pitch. Being heard is what determines range.

I suggest that you visit the website www.nats.org and find a good voice teacher that can help you with your voice....

I know this sounds weird, but if you have a piano or a keyboard then you could try this. Start at middle C and hit eack key and make your voice do what they key does until you get it perfect. Go to D then E then F then G, A, B, then up to another C. It may take some time, but then you may be able to reach a note like a high E or that crazy A. A can be a high chord. I prefer C. If your voice doesn't go much higher than it is now then dont worry about it. Deep sounding is beautiful. I love Cher's voice.

An E above middle C - is not very high at all. Sounds like you're a bass - and not even an alto.

Anyway - what you need are lessons. Work with a coach - and tell him/her that your main reason for being there is to stretch your range into a higher register. They will be able to explain to you what "head voice" is - and how you can use it. You will have to practice every day - but in time you'll get your range up there.

There are roles out there for petite altos out there. The Princess in Once Upon a Matress is one of the best!!! Not real a real "pretty" role - but a huge lead and a fabulous part!

practice every day. its gonna take a long time
-one day practice the note right above the highest one u can do now
-once u think u have that one, then go to the next one
and keep going until u have reached your goal
just take your time and be patient
u have to learn one note at a time

one way is to open your mouth up wider on the high notes.
