most definately. they can sense emotions in humans by paying attention to body language and tone of voice. if you're sad, they'll distract you. if you're crying, they can certainly tell something is wrong, and try to comfort you. they may not understand things in humans as complicated as aspirations or difficult choices, but they definately know how you feel.

Yes they do. They may not understand what you say, but they are very in-tune to your tone of voice, body language. For example, if you teach a dog to stay and while saying stay you put your hand up in the "stop" position, after awhile you can just use the hand motion with no words to get him/her to stay. Every wonder why your dog just seems to know when its time for you to go to work? go for a ride? or other things...it is because you do the same things over and over when certain events happen. They are clued into your routine.

One or two words at a time. You can say 'play" and the dog will understand, but if you say "not playing until tonight" the dog won't know what you mean. They don't understand time, future, past, or anything like that. Just say simple words, and your dog will link these to things it can understand.

My dog definitely understands me. And not just what I am saying she can sense my emotions and tell when I am not feeling well (I have multiple sclerosis). She can sense when I am depressed, when I am bored she brings me her toys. Yes, my dog understands me. I think most dogs understand their owners.

Of course they do. Dogs are highly intellegent animals, because when you say come and don't use any kind of hand signals or sit or stay and they do it and you just tell them, how do you think that they obey if they didn't understand?

You don't have to tell a dog if you're not feeling well, or if you're happy, or sad, or scared, or angry ...
Dogs just know how you feel by reading your body language.

Obviously, if we are able to train them, then they understand us. Maybe not every little thing, but they get the basic gist.
