Ecclesiasticus
Chapter 1

36 Be not incredulous to the fear of the Lord: and come not to him with a double heart. 37 Be not a hypocrite in the sight of men, and let not thy lips be a stumblingblock to thee. 38 Watch over them, lest thou fall, and bring dishonour upon thy soul, 39 And God discover thy secrets, and cast thee down in the midst of the congregation. 40 Because thou camest to the Lord wickedly, and thy heart is full of guile and deceit.

Even if life is entirely scientific and there really is no God at all, why does everyone see this as no reason for being?

From what we know so far of our universe, there are more galaxies then our mind can comprehend, more stars then we can comprehend, and more planets then we can comprehend. None of the planets in ours or other solar systems that we can see from earth are inhabited. So, figure on the chances of a planet being in that perfect situation in space where the chemical make-up of the planet, it's distance from the sun, etc. etc. etc. is just right enough to grow life. Then figure on the chances of this life developing into a self aware, intelligent being. I would say our life is precious and a miracle, whether from pure chance, god, or anything else, and being alive should be enough reason for being for anyone. That it's not is the whole problem with our species.

Then why would you have the desire to know it if there was no such thing?

Why would you have any concept of an afterlife if none existed?

Why would you think in terms that is not totally having to do with time and space and the constant present - for if there is no afterlife then how can we speak in futuristic tenses if there was no hope of a tomorrow - or ultimate tomorrow?

Think of it this way: Not ALL of us would be wrong.

I firmly believe that this is the case, as firmly as any church goer believes their faith. I also believe that I am living the better life for it, taking it as human responsibility to make a better world, not any god's job to fix what we mess up.

This brings us to the worry. What if the is no reason for being? Take a grain of sand onto your finger tip. Go ahead, I'll wait....

...got it? Okay, now look at that grain of sand, realize where it has been, understand its journey. Now do you understand the mystery of existence? No? Toss the sand back onto the floor.

That grain of sand is now lost and meaningless. It only had meaning when we asked about it, thought about it, discussed it. This is the case with life. Our life on earth is as precious and beautiful as we want it to be, because WE want it to be. There needs to be no god, no heaven, no soul. We exist, and that is enough.

Or you can decide that religion is right and that our meaning is only discovered with our death. Is a pot only meaningful after it is smashed? I think a potter would disagree, and any god would disagree your meaning is anything but to live in this world as a human and love it.

What if we are all right and there IS an afterlife? A God? A reason for being?

I love God so much, that I wouldn't want to take chance at not believing in the afterlife.

No change at all. You will still end up as worm-poop and nothing more, except you will have wasted your life paying the price to go somewhere that doesn't exist. You being screwed bad.

It would very little difference to my life or the way I live it.

I would continue to try to preserve and heal the green and beautiful planet we live on, for future generations.

I would continue to celebrate the changing seasons, and the cycle of life.

I figure it is better to believe and find out he doesn't exist than not believe and find out he does.
