I work full time as a teacher, and I have been approached by a family to "homeschool" their son who cannot attend school due to an illness. My normal tutoring rate is 50 an hour, and they want me to work three hours a day. What would be reasonable to charge them? The boy is in 7th grade.

Your normal rate is $50 per hour. They want you there 3 hours/day. Therefore, your rate is $150/day, or $750/week.

Teaching is a profession, not a babysitting job. You worked hard to get your degree and certification, and they should expect to pay accordingly.

You wouldn't expect a doctor to do house-calls on his off-hours for less than what he is paid during his scheduled hours, would you?

I am assuming that you want to give them a discount.

Your regular rate would add up to about $25,000 for 15 hours a week for 36 weeks.

I would say give them a 20% discount and charge them $20,000 perschool year or $2000 a month for 10 months out of the year.

Of course it depends upon their financial situation too. Very few people could afford to pay that much money for their child's schooling.

Another alternative would be to set up an independent study program and suggest to the parents that you meet with their son less often thus lowering the amount they would need to pay you.

This is going to be really expensive for the parents. Is there any program that the school could do for them? Surely there are other ill homebound students. What about an online program? Some states offer that for free. Plus, unless the boy is special ed, he should not require three hours of instruction each day at his age. If he is about to read on his own and write, surely he can do some things you assign him then you can check the assignments each day.
