I guess so, my friend has done it, but I personally would feel a little strange. I mean, it would feel like I would be warming my landlords house, not mine. I also would have all these people over but no personal feeling of acomplishment compared to had I bought the house myself.
Also, what do you say when you arrive? Hey mate, congratulations on getting rental approval....so how longs the lease?

if you moved to a rented space or moved in your new bought house, you should consider your budget.... if you can afford to have a housewarming party well, you can in any way you want it...

Yes--I've done mine in an apartment home and so have many of my friends. After all, it's the home you reside in and it needs warming! :)

Sure. It's still your home, isn't it? You can welcome people to it.
The whole purpose is to say, "we're so happy we've moved in and settled, share our joy." Nothing in that statement says you have to own the place. :o)
