I served in the Marines during the early 80's at the time when the Shah of Iran, Ayatollah Khomeini, captured the American embassy and held 50 hostages. During the opening deployment operations, there cannot be any contact for the simple reason that there's no time!!!
At times like those, every soldier is on alert status and on standby for deployment. The available time is allotted to weapon issues, equipment checks, and final debriefings. Besides that, there are usual security reasons especially during secret rescue missions, since any kind of leak could jeopardize the mission and the lives of soldiers.

That can happen in the Army. I am unsure how other branches work. I know when my husband deployed to Iraq he was unable to call at times for a few weeks, and we wouldn't know where he was or what he was doing. Also when a servicemember in my husbands unit would be injured or killed, phone calls home were not allowed until the family of the soldier was noftied. Not being able to have contact with family can happen a lot or a little. Just depends on the situation. It happened to us a few times during my husbands year in Iraq.

When the Marines are in Iraq they cannot disclose to their family or friends their location or missions via mail or phone.

absolutely. If that military person is part of a mission, then absolutely no contact in or out is warranted. This is done for security reasons.

numerous times. Training in the field, actual missions, general deployment to areas where communication is not doable. happens all the time, for a number of reasons.

Basic training, missions, other types of training, classified exercises. Lots of reasons.

Sure, when your in combat. Why? Because if they capture, you and they know or if they find out about your friends or family they can use them to get information out of you. they can say that they are going to kill (say John & Betty ) if you don't tell us what we want to know. And im sure you don't want your parents killed if their names are John & Betty.

There are many times especially when deployed that communication black outs occur.
