What does it mean to have a minor?

I want to minor in History, but I don't know what a minor consists of compared to a major.

I have a major in education and a major in Spanish. That means that I had to take 45 credit hours in both subjects. I have a minor in French. That means that I took just 30 credit hours in that subject. You have to have a major in order to pick up something else as a minor.
