If I recall, it was decided early on that they be allowed one AK per family, which is not a bad idea in that everybody is rightly afraid everybody else is a deadly threat. RPG's and other weapons, I agree. That still doesn't address the problem of the IED's. H.L.Mencken once pointed out that for every complex problem there's a solution that's "neat, plausible, and wrong." I don't think there is a simple solution. The Iraqi government are just going to have to get it together and get a substantial number of the factions on board.

this is kind of like what they're already doing in Iraq. they do search people's houses door-to-door, and do have programs where they try to get people to disarm themselves... of course, MOST people there have weapons, so if you just say anyone who has a weapon dies, you would be better off just dropping an atomic bomb because we're talking about TOTAL WAR here.
And they do shoot people if they see them with weapons, or even if they just fail to stop their cars... ever hear of checkpoints?

Do you really think people in Iraq are allowed to just walk around with RPG's and automatic weapons? They are just strolling down the street with a submachine gun slung over their shoulder?
It's not the solution that's simple...it's you.

Most of the violence isn't being done with RPG's! That isn't quite the same as an IED, which most people do not walk the streets with!

Um, all this pretty much already happens. The attacks come from people who aren't known to have weapons of any kind. that's why they are so successful.
